Grandma across town, a brother abroad, and a hall with mediocre reception. How to stream a wedding everyone actually sees - without a second photographer or a black screen during the chuppah.
Who are you streaming to? That changes everything
Most families start with the wrong question: which camera. The first question is who the audience is. Grandparents who cannot travel, family abroad, friends who did not get a seat - each group has different needs of time zone, language and device.
Once you have a list of 20 to 200 expected viewers, two requirements emerge that free platforms do not meet: viewing must work for everyone in one click with no install, and people who were not invited must not be able to enter. A wedding is a private event; an open YouTube stream makes it public forever.
Gear: less than you think
A recent smartphone on a tripod, or a good webcam on a laptop, is enough for a dignified stream of a chuppah and a dance floor. What actually determines the experience is stability of picture and sound, not resolution.
Take the sound from the source: a direct line from the hall's mixing board (a one-minute request to the DJ) gives clear ceremony audio even when the crowd is loud. If that is not available, a small external microphone on the tripod beats the built-in one.

Venue internet: the five-minute test
A week before the event, go to the hall and test upload speed at the exact spot you will stream from. A stable good-quality stream needs 5 Mbps of free upload; if there is less, lower the quality in advance instead of discovering it mid-chuppah.
Wired beats wireless, always. If cellular is the only option, test reception on a busy evening hour, and prepare a sufficient data plan. The rule: whatever was not tested in advance will break during the broadcast.
Invited guests only: codes instead of an open link
In Bima every viewer gets a personal viewing code with their name, or the family distributes one shared code for large groups. The link alone is not enough to watch - forwarding it does not open the door to strangers.

On the day: three things that make the difference
Go live half an hour before the ceremony with a waiting screen - family abroad discovers connection issues while there is still time to fix them. Send the codes a day earlier, with a one-line explanation: open the link, type the code, wait.
Decide in advance who answers the 'it is not working for me' phone calls - preferably not the father of the bride. And after the event, the recording is already waiting: you can open it to exactly the same viewers, with the same codes.
